5 A’s to Take Burnout Away

“When you reach for the stars, you may not quite get one,

but you won’t come up with a handful of mud either.” —Leo Burnett

» So, where are you?

2020 has been a disruptive, horrific, stressful, unbelievable year. The daily whipsaws of change, both personally and professionally, may have left you wondering “What happened?” You may be feeling blue, in a ‘low mood’, depressed, scared or  confused. You may even be wondering for the first time if this is what burnout is, between the pandemic, work and family crises or financial uncertainty and loss.

⇒ Are you burned out?

Like any twelve-step program, the first step is acknowledging that you have a problem. When it comes to physician burnout, recognizing it may be the hardest part. You may be saying “It was just a bad day,” or “I snapped at that patient/staff/partner because I got no sleep on call, and still had a full clinic the next day,” “Things will get better once…the pandemic passes, …things
get ‘back to normal’, …patients come back to my clinic.”

And what you are telling yourself may very well be true. Or they could be excuses covering up deeper problems, like those that lead you to burn out.

→ How can you know?

It’s hard to know where to go, how to reconnect to your purpose or even how to get there, if you don’t know where you are. Knowing where you are will at least let you begin to know where you want to go and how to get there.

Today we’re going to talk about the Five A’s to take BURNOUT AWAY.

Yeah I know it’s kind of cheesy, but the easiest way I could put things together.

−A NOTE ABOUT ACTION:

You are where you are as a result of your actions or inactions. Start somewhere with something. Actions that you take are all additive and accretive. They build on each other. And they become addictive but in a good way. Once you see progress from one action, the next one is easier because your mind already sees the previous success.
